How to Use Essential Oils: Cassia

Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia), a close relative of cinnamon, is known for its warm, spicy aroma and strong flavor. Native to China and Southeast Asia, cassia has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and culinary applications. Its essential oil is highly concentrated, and only small amounts are needed to enhance recipes or blends. In cooking, 1-2 drops of cassia essential oil can be used as a substitute for cinnamon in pies, breads, and desserts or as a standalone spice in savory dishes. Due to its intense potency, it should be used sparingly. While cassia is recognized for its aromatic and culinary benefits, research on whether cassia essential oil retains the same digestive and metabolic effects as whole cassia bark is still limited.

Cassia is also commonly used for immune support and seasonal wellness. Many essential oil practitioners recommend taking 1-2 drops in a veggie capsule to help support the immune system, particularly during seasonal changes. Some preliminary studies suggest that cassia contains antimicrobial properties, but more research is needed to determine its direct impact on immune function. Additionally, combining cassia with lemon essential oil in a glass of water is thought to aid digestion and curb hunger cravings, though scientific validation on cassia oil’s role in appetite suppression remains inconclusive. While cassia essential oil may offer digestive support, it is highly concentrated and should always be diluted properly before ingestion.

Sandalwood has been used since ancient times. More than 4,000 years ago, it was used to calm the mind, still the heart, and prepare the spirit to commune with Deity. In India, it’s been valued for at least 2,000 years as one of the most sacred trees, and an important part of devotional rituals.

Sandalwood is a tree with a extremely aromatic wood. It is economically and culturally important to many countries around the Pacific and Eastern Indian Ocean regions where it grows or is traded. The wood is used for making furniture, ornaments, sacred objects, carvings, and joss sticks (incense). The essential oil is used in medicine, perfume, and aromatherapy.

The tree is medium sized 12-15 meters tall. The tree reaches its full maturity in 60 to 80 years, which is when the center of the slender trunk (the heart wood) has achieved its greatest oil content. Both the heartwood and roots are fragrant and contain the oil; the bark and sapwood, however, are odorless. The Sandalwood tree is never cut down, but uprooted during the rainy season, when it is richer in precious essential oils.

Essential oils may have also been used in Indian medicine, but were popularized in the west by the perfume industry, and so became applied medicinally in the western world after the 1920’s by French aromatherapists. Sandalwood is very beneficial to the skin; it can help reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes and it promotes a healthy, smooth complexion.

In the mid 1500’s to 1700’s when the colonization of the North American continent was occurring, the settlers brought tools, and equipment over with them but more importantly they brought their cherished medical herbal books, and healing plants as well. Lemon balm was one of these herbs of great importance for its many uses. The colonist used lemon balm for cooking, and flavoring, for beverages such as teas and wines, medicine, cosmetic, and house- hold uses such as cleaning, and aromatic uses.

Because of its positive effect on mood, Melissa has long been used to calm tension, and nerves. Diffusing Melissa at night initiates a restful sleep, and promotes emotional, and cognitive health.
