Letter From a Cajun Mother

Dear son,

Just a few lines to let you know that I am still alive. I am writing this letter slowly because I know you can’t read fast. You won’t know the house when you come home; we have moved.

About your father; He has a lovely job. He has 500 men under him. He is cutting grass at the cemetery.

There was a washing machine in the new house when we moved in, but it isn’t working to good. Last week, I put 14 shirts in to it, pulled the chain and I haven’t seen the shirts since.

Your sister Mary had a baby this morning. I haven’t found out if it’s a boy or girl, so I don’t know if you are an Aunt or Uncle.

Your Uncle Tom drown last week in a vat of whiskey. Some of his co-workers dived into save him, but he fought them bravely: We cremated the body, and it took 3 days to put the fire out.

Your Father didn’t have much to drink at Christmas. I put a bottle of castor oil in his pint of beer. It kept him going till New Years Day.

I went to the doctor on Thursday and your Father came with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to open it for 10 minutes. Your Father offered to buy it from him.

It only rained twice this week, first for 3 days then for 4 days. Monday it was so windy, one of our chickens laid the same egg four times.

We received a letter yesterday from the undertaker. He said if the last installment wasn’t paid on your grandmother within seven days up she comes.

Your loving Mother,

P.S. I was going to send you $10.00 but I had already sealed the envelope.

Can’t Judge a Book by it’s Cover

Man with tattoo

He was covered with tattoos
Skin art galore
How trashy, I thought
I could look at him no more
I disliked him immensely
For his arty obsession
And right then and there
I formed a hasty impression
Circumstances brought us together
Closer than I would have dared
And I was forced to get to know him
When his soul to me he bared
He is only human, I came to realize
With love in his heart and pain in his eyes
How wrong I was about him,
I felt so much shame
To hate him, distrust him,
to ridicule and blame
Can’t judge a book by its cover
It has often been said
I truly believe that
Now I look deeper instead.

Thank you Patty for being inspired.

Programming For Success

One day, as a small child, Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a paper to his mother. He said to her, “Mom, my teacher gave this paper to me and told me only you are to read it. What does it say?” Her eyes welled with tears as she read the letter out loud to her child… “your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”

Many years after Edison’s mother had died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the century. One day he was going through a closet and he found the letter that his old teacher wrote his mother that day. He opened it… The message written on the letter was, “your son is mentally deficient. We won’t let him come to school any more.” Edison became emotional upon reading it and then wrote in this diary… “Thomas A. Edison was a mentally deficient child whose mother turned him into the genius of the century.”

A positive word of encouragement can help change anyone’s destiny.
