Privation Pie

Privation PieWhen I was eleven I wanted to make a homemade chocolate cream pie. My mother gave me the recipe. Then she said, “I will be in my bedroom if you need me.” She later admitted she would have gone nuts watching me cook when I was first learning this skill. The recipe called for 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. I added 3 tablespoons of baking soda instead. The recipe said “bring to a boil.” I couldn’t understand why the pie filling was foaming over the top of the pan. I called my mom into the kitchen.

No sooner did she come into the kitchen when she grabbed a large pan and poured part of the pie filling into the second pan. It just kept growing. This is when my mom started questioning the ingredients I had added. When I got to the cornstarch on the recipe card, I pointed to the baking soda container and said I added cornstarch. I was then told, “This pie filling is no good. When you thought you were adding cornstarch you were adding baking soda.” You can do everything just right except for one thing, ending up with a huge disaster.

Years later when I was 18 I had an opportunity to work at two separate places that made pies. I learned different techniques of pie making from both places. The Saturday before Thanksgiving I spent 18 hours making pies at Marie Calendar’s. I am thankful for my training in pie making.

I have found myself showing several women’s groups how to make the perfect pie crust, and delicious pie fillings. My failure as a child was a stepping stone to my success with making pies today.

When you ask questions, not acting like you know it all, you will learn. I still find new ways to make things better from my past mistakes. Learning what works and what doesn’t is part of the joy.

Essential oils are a lot like my early days of cooking, when I made many mistakes with recipes. Now with essential oils I find myself continually going to my modern essential book which outlines the oil that works best for each condition I might have when I was unfamiliar with how the oils work. I find as in cooking, and with essential oils every time I fail, I am learning important life lessons.

Lavender Is Essential

Lavender

What is there not to like about lavender essential oil? I will say this about most essential oils, lavender is one of my favorites. I remember breathing in the aroma of lavender for the first time with almost reverence. Experiencing this oil by touch and smell made the experience more memorable. This is one of those experiences when you remember what you were doing at that moment in time.

Even though I was not happy initially about sitting through an essential oil class, this was a breakthrough moment. After smelling the pure scent of lavender, I felt for the first time deep down, that dōTERRA essential oils are remarkable and lavender was an oil I could get excited about, and share it with others.

When we got our Family Physician’s kit, I was excited to try the oils to see how effective they were in our everyday life. After a month of using the oils we received, I knew these small 5 ml bottles wouldn’t last long. Looking back I wish we would have bought the home Essential kit, a kit with three times the amount of oil for only $100 dollars more.

What I observed over the next few months was a total transformation in how I looked at everyday living and watching my family change their lifestyle. When my kids were looking in the Modern Essentials book to find out what oil worked best for headaches, or see what would help an injured knee, I knew we were on to something.

One of the first things I remember trying with lavender essential oil was putting it on my daughter’s hand after she got burned by a hot pan. I knew Stephanie’s burned hand was in pain because she was using ice to numb her senses. I told Stephanie we should try lavender, and she agreed. We went on with our nights activities. About an hour later I asked how is the burn on your hand doing? She couldn’t remember were the burn was.

Another thing I remember seeing was a baby tired and fussy and looking totally miserable. The mom was asked if she would let us put lavender essential oil on her babies back to calm him down. She agreed, and within 30 seconds the sad little boy was transformed into a calm and relaxed one.

Every Spring I look forward to the warm weather. However I am not excited about my allergies brought on by all the pollen in the air. I like having lavender near by. I will rub it under what an amazing experience. I also like TriEase a seasonal blend gelcap, used for season discomfort that has lavender in it.

When I discover things that are amazing I refuse to keep quiet. This is why I have a passion for essential oils They are a blessing in my life, and I love to share them with others.

My Essential Oil Story

Leonard FishI want to share my  essential oil story with everyone. Just to back up a bit, I grew up with parents that believed  it is better to try to heal an illness naturally first, and if that doesn’t work then go to the doctor. I remember taking all kinds of herbs and natural remedies. Many I believe helped. However, I am still not convinced taking a tablespoon of cod liver oil every morning keeps you from getting sick. I still have nightmares over that. One thing I noticed my mom using were Essential Oils. I thought how strange it was to rub an oil on your body, because they are known to have healing properties, I wasn’t convinced.

Fast forward 20 years. We have friends that we have known for 16 years that talked my wife Cassie into having an Essential Oils class in our home. I was not happy when I found out about it. After all, I knew all I needed to know about Essential Oils. I thought it was a little strange when my parents  used them to help with aches and pains. I thought they were just a placebo to help people think they were getting healed.

I had the perfect plan. I would stay at the meeting for 20 minutes then gracefully exit, and go with my daughter to an extra credit Sign Language activity at a nearby university. We misplaced the information about the class, and decided to stay for the entire Essential Oil class. At the very end of the class, we were asked if we wanted to get scanned with a bio-feedback machine called a Zyto scan ( This is a machine that sends impulses from your body to a computer that will tell you what oils will work best for you individually.) I thought this ranked right up there with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. When I got scanned, the scanner showed that I needed the repellent blend  of essential oils, a blend of oils used for an insect repellent. The presenter said that was interesting as the repellent blend will show up on the scanner if someone is “bugged” or annoyed. I said I didn’t want to be at this class, and everyone had a good laugh. Then Cassie got scanned. What showed up on her scan surprised us. It showed that she needed to use the soothing blend of essential oils (an oil that has been studied for bone and tissue repair.) We never told our friends that a week prior, Cassie had fallen at work and injured her knee. This really got Cassie’s attention. We ordered a Family Physician Kit and a Modern Essentials book. I was still not totally convinced that these oils worked. In my mind, I thought what a waste. In a month or two, this fad will go away.

The more we have used the Essential Oils, the more we are amazed by their effectiveness, and how powerful they are. Our kids go to the Modern Essentials book first when they have a health concern that needs to be addressed. We cannot imagine our lives without Essential Oils, and love to share them with everyone we know. We use Essential Oils daily. Let me know what your health concerns are. I would be honored to share some with you. May God bless you on your path to healthy living.
