Five aromatic ingredients, exact measurements, and a formula so sacred that it wasn’t intended for ordinary use. Exodus 30 gives us one of the Bible’s most fascinating descriptions of aromatic substances. Moses is instructed to gather myrrh, cinnamon, aromatic cane, cassia, and olive oil and have them prepared into a sacred anointing oil. These weren’t simply ingredients chosen because they smelled good. In the biblical account, the finished preparation was set apart for a specific religious purpose and used to anoint the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, the altar, sacred vessels, and Aaron and his sons as part of their consecration.
