There is something unmistakable about the aroma of Arborvitae essential oil. Deep, woody, warm, and distinctly outdoorsy, it brings to mind towering evergreens, freshly cut timber, and a quiet walk through the forest.

Arborvitae comes from Thuja plicata, commonly known as western red cedar, a magnificent evergreen native to western North America. Its wood has long been valued for its durability and distinctive aroma. The essential oil provides another way to experience the aromatic character of this remarkable tree.

One interesting way to use Arborvitae is for natural wood care. Try combining four drops of Arborvitae with two drops of Lemon essential oil and a small amount of carrier oil. Apply sparingly to an appropriate natural wood surface with a soft cloth. Always test your mixture on a small, inconspicuous area first, since finishes and woods can react differently.

Arborvitae can also become part of an outdoor aromatic routine. When appropriately diluted, a small amount can be applied before heading outside simply to enjoy its fresh, woodsy fragrance. Avoid presenting it as a substitute for a registered insect repellent when protection from mosquito- or tick-borne disease is needed.

For quieter moments, try Arborvitae in the diffuser. Three or four drops in a 100–200 mL diffuser can create a rich forest-like atmosphere. It pairs naturally with reflective activities such as meditation, reading, journaling, or simply sitting quietly at the end of the day.

Arborvitae is interesting from a chemistry perspective as well. Its essential oil contains naturally occurring volatile compounds that contribute to its distinctive aromatic profile.

If you’re accustomed to citrus and floral essential oils, Arborvitae offers something entirely different. It’s bold, woody, and unmistakably botanical—a small bottle with the aromatic personality of a much larger tree.
